Schengen Visa Guide for Indians: Which Country to Apply Through (September 2026)

You apply through whichever Schengen country is your main destination (or first entry point if visiting several) — but when you have a genuine choice, some countries approve Indian applicants noticeably faster and more consistently than others.

Reflects our research as of September 2026. You must apply through the country where you'll spend the most nights (or your first entry point) — this isn't a workaround, just a guide to plan your itinerary around when you have flexibility.

    Easier Approval Odds

These countries process lower application volumes with more transparent, consistent criteria — genuine documentation still matters most, but the odds tilt in your favor here.

    Lithuania

Consistently the highest approval rate for Indian applicants — low volume, transparent process.

    Iceland

Very low rejection rate; a solid choice if approval odds matter more than the specific itinerary.

    Switzerland

Fast, consistent processing — though not a low-volume country, it's known for efficiency.

    Italy

Accessible processing with a strong approval track record for genuine applicants.

    Slovakia

Growing in popularity for exactly this reason — accessible and less saturated.

    Romania

A smart, budget-friendly alternative with reasonable approval odds — note: not yet full Schengen, check current status before applying.

    Higher-Volume, Stricter Screening

France and Germany receive a much higher volume of applications from Indian travelers, which tends to mean stricter document screening. Not a reason to avoid them if that's genuinely your main destination — just don't expect the fastest turnaround.

    Document Checklist

Valid passport with at least 2 blank pages, valid 3+ months beyond your return date
    Completed Schengen visa application form
Travel/medical insurance covering the whole Schengen area, minimum €30,000 coverage
    Confirmed flight itinerary (round-trip)
Proof of accommodation for every night of the trip
Bank statements for the last 6 months + ITR
Cover letter explaining the purpose and itinerary of the trip
Employment/business proof — same salaried vs. self-employed split as other visas

Strong documentation beats country selection every time — a weak financial or employment case will get rejected from Lithuania just as fast as from France. Country choice only matters when your case is already genuinely solid.
